All three Reigate Women FC teams had away fixtures for the sixth weekend of the Surrey FA Flexible league.
Reigate Women FC Panthers travelled to Kingswood knowing they had a tough job on their hands after watching Kingswood defeat the Panthers’ sister club in the last round of fixtures. The game started quickly with the football being played from both teams really catching the eye. Panthers opened the scoring with a left footed strike from Rebecca Nesbitt, but Kingswood struck back immediately after a mazy run from Sarah Chapman. The first half continued in a frantic fashion with both teams hitting the woodwork before Kingswood took the lead through Rachel Steele. Reigate worked hard and were rewarded for their efforts after Chrissy Watts finished off a fine move. The second half was just as frantic as the first and the Panthers pushed hard but the final product would not come. Kingswood hit the Panthers on the break but Lucy Manning stormed out of goal to challenge the striker and snuff out the chance. The game looked set to finish 2-2 when Kingswood had one last break which resulted in a thunder-strike that looked certain to nestle in the top corner before striking Panthers’ defender Lauren Gillett in the head, securing a well fought point.
Reigate Women FC Tigresses travelled to Chiswick for their away game against ESPS Phoenix. The teams were evenly matched, with chances missed at both ends and some fantastic saves by the two goalkeepers, Rhianna Skinner for the Tigresses and Sophie Lamb for ESPS Phoenix. Eventually, Tash Waterman broke the deadlock for the Tigresses midway through the first half, although her effort was cancelled out shortly before half-time with Michele Colt equalising for ESPS Phoenix. The second half started with great promise from both sides; however an unfortunate injury to one of the Tigresses resulted in the match having to be abandoned early in the second half. Both teams agreed that the result should be submitted anyway and the game ended as a 1-1 draw.
The Reigate Women FC Lionesses had an away game at Lyne FC Ladies and were looking to get back to winning ways after losing their previous fixture. In the first half, the Lionesses took the lead through Misha West. Goal-scorer West went into the Lionesses goal for the second half, and had some great saves, while the Lionesses extended their lead with goals from player-manager Becky Keogh and defender Steph Thorbes, the latter scoring directly from a corner kick. Lyne scored from a scramble in the box after a corner but could not come back. The 3-1 win consolidated the Lionesses’ position as league leaders, with two games to play.
The full weekend’s results were:
ESPS Phoenix 1-1 Reigate Women FC Tigresses
Kingswood Ladies 2-2 Reigate Women FC Panthers
Lyne FC Ladies 1-3 Reigate Women FC Lionesses
Woking Diamonds 1-2 Sheen Mounties
The next round of fixtures will be played on Sunday 12 May 2019.
